How to split and extract PDF pages

Use Split PDF when you want a separate one-page PDF for every page in the source file. Use Extract PDF Pages when you want one new PDF containing only selected pages. PDFandDOC's Split and Extract workflows run in your browser, so the selected PDF is not uploaded to PDFandDOC for these operations.

Split or extract?

Split and Extract solve different page-selection problems and produce different output shapes. Split is appropriate when every page needs to stand on its own, because the current Split PDF workflow creates one one-page PDF for each source page. Extract is appropriate when you need a smaller document containing only selected pages, because it creates one PDF from the page numbers or ranges you choose and keeps those pages in their original source order. Before processing, decide whether the downstream task expects many independent files or one curated document. That decision affects how you name, store and share the results. For long PDFs, use the source page count and available preview information to map the pages you need before entering ranges. Keep the source PDF until the outputs have been checked, particularly when page numbering printed on the document differs from the PDF viewer's 1-based page positions.

Current limits

  • Split PDF: one PDF file per run, up to 25 MiB and 200 pages
  • Split PDF: up to 50 MiB total output across the one-page PDFs
  • Extract PDF Pages: one PDF file per run, up to 25 MiB and 200 pages
  • Extract PDF Pages: selected pages are kept in original document order
  • Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are not supported by this tool.

Steps

  1. Choose Split PDF if you need every source page as its own PDF, or Extract PDF Pages if you need only selected pages in one PDF.
  2. Select one PDF file and confirm it is within the current file-size and page-count limits.
  3. For Extract, enter page numbers or inclusive ranges such as 1,3-5. For Split, no page-range input is required because every page becomes a separate PDF.
  4. Process the file locally, download the result or results, and verify the pages before sharing them.
  5. When extracting, translate the pages you want into the PDF's actual 1-based page positions. Printed page numbers in headers or footers can differ from viewer positions because covers, introductions or appendices may use different numbering schemes.
  6. Use the page count and preview to check the first and last selected page before processing. For ranges, verify both ends so a compact expression such as 12-18 does not accidentally include a neighboring section.
  7. After Split PDF finishes, check that the output count matches the source page count and open a few outputs from the beginning, middle and end. After Extract PDF Pages finishes, confirm the result contains the selected pages in their original document order.
  8. Keep the original PDF until the outputs have been accepted. Splitting and extracting are organizational operations, so it is often safer to preserve the source as the reference copy and treat each generated file as a derivative that may need a clearer filename before distribution.

Example

Example: imagine a twelve-page packet containing a cover on page 1, four application pages on 2-5, supporting evidence on 6-10 and two instruction pages on 11-12. Split PDF would create twelve one-page PDFs. If you only need the application and evidence as one document, Extract PDF Pages can use 2-10 to create a nine-page PDF in the same source order. If you instead need pages 2, 4 and 9, enter those positions and verify the resulting three-page file before sharing it.

Split PDF and Extract PDF Pages run in your browser, so the selected PDF is not uploaded to PDFandDOC for those operations. Browser-direct HTTPS URL intake, when used, is a direct request from your browser to the source site and can fail when that site does not permit cross-origin access. Ordinary website requests can still occur while document bytes remain local to the processing workflow. This boundary describes the current PDFandDOC tools and is not a general claim that every online PDF service, browser, device or network is safe for every document.

Questions

What is the difference between splitting and extracting PDF pages?

Split PDF creates a separate one-page PDF for every source page. Extract PDF Pages creates one PDF from only the page numbers or ranges you select.

Can Extract PDF Pages rearrange the selected pages?

No. The current Extract PDF Pages tool keeps selected pages in their original document order.

Can I split or extract pages from a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted/password-protected PDFs are not supported by the current tools, and there is no password prompt or decryption flow.

Why can printed page numbers differ from the page numbers I should enter?

PDF tools work with the document's page positions, starting at page 1 in the viewer. A document may print Roman numerals in a preface, restart numbering in the main section or omit a number on a cover, so the visible footer can disagree with the PDF position. Use the viewer or page preview to identify the actual positions, then check the first and last requested page before creating the output.

How do I choose between Extract PDF Pages and Organize PDF?

Use Extract when the main task is to keep selected source pages together in their original order. Use Organize PDF when you need to reorder, rotate or remove pages as part of a broader page-plan change. Choosing the narrower tool when it matches the task can make the result easier to verify because there are fewer transformations to review.

What should I verify after splitting a long PDF?

Confirm that the number of outputs equals the source page count, that filenames or download labels make the page relationship understandable, and that representative files from the start, middle and end open correctly. If the pages will be sent separately, rename or organize them according to the receiving workflow rather than relying only on generated numbering, and keep the source PDF until the set has been checked.
