Methodology
How PDFandDOC tests tools and reviews content
PDFandDOC checks current tool behavior with synthetic sample files, automated tests, browser workflows and editorial review. These checks help verify documented behavior but do not amount to a security certification, independent audit or guarantee across every browser and device.
Sample documents used for checks
- PDFandDOC uses synthetic, non-sensitive sample documents for testing so checks do not require real user files or personal document content.
- Sample coverage includes valid and malformed PDFs, password-protected rejection cases, varied page and layout characteristics, and supported document-format cases.
- Automated checks exercise tool-specific limits, validation, error handling and fail-closed behavior against synthetic sample files.
- Representative samples exercise the behavior a public page describes, such as page ordering, extraction ranges, flattened overlays, image decoding, native PDF text, DOCX input validation and searchable-PDF output. A passing sample demonstrates that scenario rather than universal compatibility with every document producer or viewer.
- When a tool intentionally rejects an input class, such as legacy DOC for the Secure Cloud Word converters or password-protected PDFs, checks cover the rejection path as well as the successful path so public documentation can describe the boundary without implying a hidden fallback.
Browser testing
- Interactive workflows are checked through browser tests that exercise public pages and downloads where those checks are relevant.
- Browser evidence is described only for flows that were actually checked, including downloads and file-handling behavior where relevant.
- Automated browser coverage does not replace broader manual accessibility, cross-browser and real-world performance review.
- Browser checks cover the visible states users depend on: source selection, selected-file information, processing or error feedback, generated-result controls and reset/download behavior where the tool exposes those states.
- Responsive checks look for practical failures such as horizontal overflow or controls becoming unreachable at narrow widths. They are regression checks, not a promise that every browser version, assistive technology or device combination has been manually certified.
Privacy verification
- Privacy wording is checked against each tool's actual processing path so browser processing and Secure Cloud processing are described differently where they apply.
- Privacy wording is checked against each tool's verified behavior; browser-local document processing does not imply that the website makes zero network requests.
- Automated security checks are limited safeguards; they do not replace an independent penetration test, full security audit, certification or accreditation.
Content review
- Guides and trust pages show reviewer labels and last-reviewed dates, while tool pages explain capabilities, processing location and privacy boundaries.
- Independent reviews are mentioned only when they have actually occurred.
- PDFandDOC does not invent reviewer identities or claim third-party accreditation that has not occurred.
Benchmarks
- The browser-local PDF-to-Word converter requires useful native text on every page and produces editable text rather than a layout-faithful reconstruction.
- Word to Image, Word to PDF and OCR PDF use the documented Secure Cloud workflows. PDF to Word remains intentionally limited to PDFs that already contain useful native text, so scanned or image-only documents require a separate OCR workflow.
- Performance or quality comparisons are described as current only when the supporting evidence has been reproduced and reviewed.
Update process
- When a tool, processing boundary or public claim changes, related guidance is checked again so the published description matches current behavior.
- When public pages or URLs change, navigation and search metadata are checked so they continue to match the available product.
- Last-reviewed dates change only after the corresponding content receives a substantive review.
Current limitations
- Automated security checks do not replace an independent security assessment or penetration test.
- Automated accessibility and browser checks do not replace manual accessibility review or testing on every browser and device.
- This methodology page describes how current product behavior is checked; it does not make live uptime or service-availability claims.
- PDF to Word runs in the browser and is limited to PDFs with useful native text on every page; it does not add OCR or silently fall back to Secure Cloud processing.
- Image to Word provides browser-local OCR for supported images. PDF to Text extracts an existing PDF text layer only. OCR PDF / Make Searchable PDF is a separate Secure Cloud workflow.
