What this tool does
PDF to Text runs locally in your browser so you can prepare, preview and export the supported result without a server upload.
This extracts only an existing PDF text layer; scanned or image-only pages need a separate OCR workflow.
How to use it
- Choose the supported input file or files from your device.
- Review the preview and adjust the available output options.
- Run PDF to Text, review the result and download it when it is ready.
Limits and fidelity
- Support depends on browser capabilities and the source file format.
- Very large or complex files can be limited by available device memory and processing speed.
- Password-protected PDFs are not supported when a PDF is the input.
Privacy
Supported processing happens in your browser. Selected file bytes are not sent to PDFandDOC servers.
Safety
Keep the original file and inspect the downloaded result before replacing an important document or asset.
About this workflow
PDF to Text extracts the existing text layer from a supported PDF and shows the actual extracted text before download. It is not OCR and does not infer text from scanned page images.
The extraction runs locally in the browser. The text preview is based on the runtime result, so the page does not display fabricated sample text when the source cannot provide it.
What to check before processing
Check that the PDF contains selectable or searchable text. Multi-column layouts, positioned text fragments and unusual encodings can produce a reading order that differs from the visual page.
If a document is primarily scanned images, use OCR PDF when you need a searchable PDF or an OCR workflow designed for image content rather than relying on native-text extraction.
What to expect from the result
The result state contains the extracted plain text for review and a TXT download. Plain text intentionally drops page styling, fonts and most layout information.
Review names, line breaks, columns and symbol-heavy content before reusing the text because PDF internal reading order is not always the same as visual reading order.
Common uses
- Copy text from a digitally generated PDF into another workflow.
- Create a plain-text reference copy of a text-based PDF.
- Inspect whether a PDF exposes useful native text.
Tips for a better result
- Use the on-page text preview to spot reading-order issues before downloading.
- Expect visual formatting to be lost in TXT output.
- Do not use PDF to Text as an OCR substitute for scans.
Frequently asked questions
- Can PDF to Text read scanned PDFs?
- It only extracts an existing PDF text layer. Image-only scans require OCR rather than native-text extraction.
- Why can text order differ from the page?
- PDF content can be stored as positioned text fragments instead of a simple document reading sequence, so extraction order can differ from visual layout.
